Why Did Voldemort Attach Himself To Quirrell? (Explained)

During the final battle in the Sorcerer’s Stone, it was revealed that Voldemort had been attached to Professor Quirrell all this while!

Why did Voldemort do such a thing in the first place?

Here’s what you need to know:

Why did Voldemort attach himself to Quirrell?

Here are 3 main reasons why Voldemort attached himself to Quirrell:

  1. Voldemort needed a vessel for his disembodied spirit
  2. Voldemort needed help to steal the Sorcerer’s Stone
  3. Voldemort needed access to Hogwarts so he could get the Stone

#1 Voldemort needed a vessel for his disembodied spirit

When Lord Voldemort failed to kill Harry Potter as a baby, he lost most of his power. Even though he was still alive, the Dark Lord did not have a physical body.

However, even when he only existed in a non-corporeal form, he was still able to control of other bodies, including animal and humans.

Voldemort initially inhabited snakes, but they were unable to perform magic, and his possession reduced their lifespan. While he waited for his followers to come to him, none of them came as they were either dead or in Azkaban.

Funnily enough, Quirrell was the only one who searched for Voldemort, in hopes that he would gain fame and knowledge!

#2 Voldemort needed help to steal the Sorcerer’s Stone

The Sorcerer’s Stone was known to produce the Elixir of Life, which could make the user immortal.

Voldemort had a fascination of wanting to become immortal, so the Sorcerer’s Stone intrigued him.

However, during that time, he was between life and death. He had no physical form. As such, Voldemort needed help to get hold of the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Since Quirrell was the only human that he could take control of, he finally had a vessel that he could use to do his bidding.

#3 Voldemort needed access to Hogwarts so he could get the Stone

Possibly another reason why Voldemort needed Quirrell was because he was recently hired as the Defence Against The Dark Arts in Hogwarts.

When Quirrell first failed to steal the Stone from Gringotts the Stone was moved to Hogwarts. Because of this, Voldemort needed a way to enter Hogwarts without anyone noticing.

This could be why Voldemort decided to remain with Quirrell, since he was able to gain access to Hogwarts without meeting any of its defences.

However, the Dark Lord’s face was sticking out of the back of Quirrell’s head. As such, Quirrell had to wear a turban to ensure that Voldemort wasn’t discovered.

How did Voldemort attach himself to Professor Quirrell?

It was mentioned that Voldemort took immediate possession of Quirrell, although the exact spell that he used was not stated. However, since Quirrell was searching for Voldemort and Quirrell underestimated his power, it could have been an easy fight before Voldemort took full control.

In fact, J.K. Rowling mentioned that Quirrell was turned into a temporary Horcrux by Voldemort!

This gave Voldemort more freedom as he could now use a physical body to carry out his tasks, particularly to find the Sorcerer’s Stone to gain immortality.

Conclusion

Quirrell ticked a few boxes which ultimately led Voldemort choosing him as his physical vessel:

  • He was the only one who came searching for him
  • He underestimated Voldemort’s power
  • Quirrell’s standing as a Professor in Hogwarts helped him to gain access to one of the most secure places

Although a rather unlikely combination, Voldemort still chose to stick with Quirrell (quite literally) until his bitter end!
